A Month of Reflection – 2019 Diaries

January 30th 2019

On our road trip through 2019, we have officially hit our first rest stop and it is time to take a moment to look back on this month~

I am trying to visualize this year to be a bit of a road trip to a new life. On any long road trip, there will be highs, lows, times where you need to stop and rest, and a lot of unexpected things you can see along the way. That is why, this year, I want to make the last post of every month be a little rest stop check in on my progress this year, and I also encourage you to leave comments about how your month has gone.

So, things that have happened this month:

  • I have done yoga almost every day either at home or in the studio
  • I have spent a lot of time cleaning out my room to prepare for the move
  • I have read about 30% of a book
  • I haven’t gotten back into my meditation practice yet
  • I haven’t traveled, but I started planning a trip

I chose to mention things I haven’t done this month so I can look back each month and track the growth of my different goals and aspirations this year. I know that not every goal will progress every month, but I at least want to keep track.

The first thing I want to talk about this month is yoga. I really made it a huge intention of mine to get back into yoga home practices a lot this year. Lucky for me, Yoga with Adriene always does a 30 day yoga journey at the start of the new year, so I have been able to keep up with home practices pretty easily. I also purchased a yoga wheel which has added a new layer to my practice and I am OBSESSED. Laying the strong foundation for my practice now will hopefully help get me through the year and build a life-long habit.

As you can see above, moving has occupied most of my time with month. So much so that I sort of feel like my weight loss and fitness have fallen off a bit. Now that things seem to be winding down, I think I will be able to get back on track.

I spend most of my down time trying to clean out and re-clean out spaces in my room in the hopes of cutting down as much “clutter” as I can. I am sort of working off my own version of the Konmari method…the SimJessi method if you will (That was so cheesy, please forgive me). I am not doing the whole “sparks joy” thing with all of my clothes because if I did that then I would have tons of fun clothes and not have any clothes for work or business casual occasions.  But I can confidently say that I have been doing A LOT of tidying up and I feel it really shows. Plus, it feels good that I have donated a ton of stuff to charity and threw away a lot of items that weren’t serving a purpose.

In terms of my reading, I recently wrote a post about managing expectations because I had really intended on finishing the book I started this month, but with everything else happening, I really didn’t make a large dent like I had originally intended to. On top of that, this month has been a bit too crazy to get back into a really relaxed meditation practice or planning any trips. My focus right now is using yoga to work on my over-active mind and using this month to save up for a trip that I will hopefully be taking at the end of February! Which should offer a very fun travel post.

Here are a few goals I have for the month of February though:

  • Finish the book I’m reading
  • Incorporate short meditations into my home yoga practice
  • Do laundry more often (my biggest flaw is how long I put off laundry)
  • Spend less time scrolling through social media—I want to use my socials to post mindfully but I don’t want to continue my habit of mindless scrolling
  • Successfully take the trip I am planning
  • Get back into full healthy eating mode and work on meal prepping

How has your January treated you? What are you hoping to do in February?

Jess~

  1. It’s very good idea to mention things which you couldn’t do with things you did.
So you can plan your next month accordingly.
    Great thought 👌
Keep it up. May all you achieve all your goals 😊

  2. I like how you mention managing expectations! Often I set goals with little room for flexibility and I’m super dissappointed so now I’m working on managing my time
