I am not you and I do not want to be…
No matter how similar two people appear to be, they are not the same. This is a lesson that I feel we all must learn at some point in our lives. Not every person is going to view a situation the same way you do. You may find someone else’s normal to be quite ridiculous and they may view your normal in the same light. Just because you’re okay with something doesn’t mean everyone around you is obligated to feel the same. Just because a particular statement wouldn’t upset you if it was said to you doesn’t mean that someone else isn’t entitled to feel differently. Just because you don’t like a particular type or music or food doesn’t mean that someone else can’t love it and think it is amazing.
The world isn’t all you. We are surrounded by people every day who have totally different views and values and interests! Isn’t that beautiful?! We can learn so much about people who are nothing like us and we don’t need to put so much emphasis on being the same. If we were all the same then we could never be exposed to anything exciting and new and we could never have the opportunity to learn anything new about ourselves. We would have nothing that makes us unique.
It is good to be different. It is good to surround yourself with people who challenge your point of view as long as they respect it. It is how you grow. You can’t grow if no one ever challenges you to think differently. However, don’t waste time on people who are too vain to be challenged. Don’t waste time on people who would rather win an argument than to hear things from your side. Don’t be that person to other people.
Fall in love with being yourself and respect the people are you for doing the same. We are all equally as important and complex and we deserve our space to be who we are. And we can do that without knocking people down for doing the same.
And please remember, I’m not you and I don’t want to be…
