Fashion Friday: A Guide to Personal Style

June 8th 2018

Be you, inside and out~

Fashion is self-expression. What you wear is how you choose to present yourself to people without words or actions. The way you dress tells people a lot about you before you even get to say a word. What does your personal style say about you? Are you preppy, casual, sporty, edgy, boho…or are you not sure? Figuring out your personal style takes 2 things:

  1. A lot of patience
  2. The understanding that you don’t have to fit one label in order to have personal style

Have you ever gone to a store and looked at an article of clothing and have it immediately remind you of someone you love? That is personal style. The ability for other people to look at a piece of clothing on the rack and say “that’s so you!” shows that you have developed a personal style and that it speaks for you.

So, how do you find your personal style? Well, the first step to finding your personal style is through trial and error. Go to a store and try on anything that catches your eye, even if it is out of your comfort zone. See what works and what doesn’t! Speaking from personal experience, I have found that there are tons of clothes that I really love on other people but just not on myself. Those clothes may be my taste but just don’t fit into my personal style.

Once you’ve found some pieces you really enjoy, figure out what about them you enjoy. Is it the cut, the pattern, the color, the texture? Once you figure out what about the garment appeals to you, you will be able to find similar pieces that will fit nicely into your wardrobe.

But be sure to keep an open mind. Just because you tried one crop top and hated it, doesn’t mean that you can’t wear crop tops and they don’t fit into your personal style. Try again and see if there is a different way you can style a piece before you count it out. I used to really hate crop tops until I found out that I love wearing them with skirts and overall dresses. That discovery contributed to greatly to my personal style, but I almost didn’t give crop tops a chance!

Another great tip to finding your personal style is through inspiration boards. I use Pinterest to make boards for each season to take style inspiration from! I also take pictures of myself in outfits I enjoy in order to remember them for the future and to use as inspiration when shopping!

My last piece of advice is, don’t force it. Don’t try to dress like other people just because you don’t know what your personal style is and you want to fit in. You will find your personal style if you keep an open mind and keep exploring! You don’t always have to gravitate towards what is trendy (but if that is your personal style then go for it). It is people who go against the trends that stand out, so keep looking for what makes YOU happy instead of just going with everyone else is doing.

So here is the comment question for this post:

What is your personal style?

I think mine is a mix of everything. I like to stay on trend but put my own personal twist on things. I love simple outfits like t-shirts, jeans and sneakers, but sometimes I try to make out of the box fashion choices to experiment!

  1. My personal style is also a mix of everything. Sometimes I follow trends but only if I like them, otherwise I like to add my personal touch that represents me as me. Thanks for sharing!

    1. That’s awesome! I view myself in sort of the same way. I don’t think I fit one specific style category but I do feel like I can always tell what kinds of clothes are really “me”— Thanks for commenting!

  2. My style can be sexy! But I usually don’t pay much attention to what I wear so I guess my style is “i don’t care!” lol but summer time, I am trying to look nice at least once in a while. I have already bought a few dresses and am trying to wear them everyday

  3. Hello Jess,

I absolutely agree with you: It is people who go against the trends that stand out, so keep looking for what makes YOU happy! TRUE!

I am not a super girly girl in my fashion style, I would rather describe it as cool and iconic. I blog exactly about that: not following trends and finding the power to dress how you feel the most empowered. I just followed you. Would love to stay in touch.

    1. Thank you for following and reading! And I totally agree with not following trends for the sake of following, it is so much better to just do what makes you happy and let your fashion speak itself!

  4. […] Fashion Friday: A Guide to Personal Style This post continues to confuse me, but impress me. When I wrote it, I expected very little from it. However, this has grown to be my most liked and viewed post. I really enjoyed putting it together and talking about my feelings towards fashion and personal style. But I never expected it to resonate with people in such a way that it did. […]
