Work ethic has its place in every area of life. Weather it be school, work, sports, hobbies, personal projects, etc., work ethic is the cornerstone of your success. However, finding motivation to improve your work ethic isn’t always easy. Sometimes you won’t want to blog, or go to the gym, or write that paper, or finish that 20 page report before the next meeting, but you have to and a strong work ethic will get you there with ease if you let it.

Here are 5 ways to improve your work ethic and begin the process of self motivation and productivity.

  1. Set clear personal deadlines and quotas- I have gotten in the habit of doing this for myself this year and it has helped a ton. If you want to improve your work ethic in the area of blogging, make a production calendar (I give an example of a production calendar in one of my earlier posts). If you want to find a new job, set a quota for how many applications you want to do a week. By giving yourself clear goals to aim for, you will hold yourself more accountable to your actions in completing those goals.
  2. Remember your end goal- Set some intentions. If you want to improve your work ethic in school, put it out into the universe. Say something like “I want to improve my work ethic so I can get straight A’s this semester and get good scholarships.” If you want to further your career, remind yourself “If I work towards more goals then I will be one step closer to that promotion or new job.” By putting it into words, you are more likely to see the value in improving your work ethic.
  3. Don’t compare yourself- My work ethic at it’s current best allows me to put out 4 blog posts a week. However, your best work ethic may only allow you to put out 2 posts a week AND THAT IS OKAY. Don’t compare your best efforts to someone else’s. Everyone works to different capacities and you should focus on your work ethic at its best and not the people around you. When you start letting other people’s capabilities weigh in on your perception of your own, you may burn out instead of maintaining a healthy work ethic.
  4. Find a balance- Having a good work ethic isn’t working 24/7, it is working to reach a goal at the appropriate time and letting yourself relax after to avoid burnout. If you want to write a book within the year, that doesn’t mean that, in order to have a good work ethic, you must write 9 hours a day, 7 days a week. It means setting aside time to sit down and write and focus your attention for designated periods of time. You could set aside 1 hour of focus time a week to write and if you are consistent with that, your work ethic is just as great as if you wrote for 9 hours a day every day. Work ethic is about focus and dedication more than it is about hours of work.
  5. Don’t be lazy- Saved the easiest one for last. Just don’t be lazy, it is as simple as that! If you want to do well at school, hey don’t be lazy, study and ask questions and get extra help when needed. Spend time figuring out what needs to be done then do it. Don’t get super motivated for 2 weeks then fall off after things become too “busy”. There is no excuse not to push yourself to reach your highest potential (within reason). The best way to improve your work ethic is to use the time you have to reach the goals you set instead of wasting time being lazy.
