My 2018 Soundtrack

New Year, New Muse

On the first day of the new year, I made a playlist called New Year, New Muse where I have been putting every song that has caught my attention and been stuck in my head since the start of the new year. I found that the second the ball dropped and it became 2018 that my music preferences have really shifted.

I am still totally in love with the music I listened to last year, but at the start of this year I have really seen a shift towards alternative rock and male fronted bands. Last year was a huge year for female artists for me and although I am still bopping to all of my favorite headstrong mamas, I have found a greater appreciation for some talented musical men.

Here are some of my favorite bops from my playlist and you can check out the whole thing by clicking here. You can also follow me on Spotify to see what I add throughout my year in music:

Paralyzer by Finger Eleven- OKKKKK so I had to say this song first because it has been one of my favorite songs for YEARS and I would totally freak out whenever it would come on and it took me until 2018 to add this song onto a playlist. This is my favorite aggressive walking to work song. 10/10 angst everywhere.

The Hamptons by Transviolet- Proof that I didn’t forget about female artists in 2018. I heard this song sometime towards the end of last year and I really fell in love with it. The artist’s voice reminds me vaguely of Halsey and I really dig the style. Plus, I live on Long Island so the stigmas surrounding the Hamptons aren’t any secret to me, but hearing them personified in a song was sort of rad because I never really hear Long Island mentioned in songs very often (except by Jon Bellion).

Guru by Coast Modern- I’ve seen Coast Modern live once before and they have a super beachy sound. I really enjoy this song because it offers me a bit of hippy summer bop in the dead of winter. Plus the lyric “chillin’ on the sofa, I don’t want to yoga, I don’t want to life right now” is the epitome of what Saturdays are to me.

Ignore Me by Betty Who-  It is no secret that Betty Who is my favorite artist. When she said she was dropping her label and going solo I was floored. She put out the song Ignore Me by complete surprise and I was not at all disappointed. DO. NOT. SLEEP. ON. BETTY. WHO.

I Only Lie When I Love You by Royal Blood- This is another song that appeals to the angst in me. It is relatively repetitive but not boring and super edgy and fun. I can’t explain it, but when I first heard this song, I could have sworn I had heard it tons before but I don’t know where.

First by Cold War Kids- This is another song that I feel like I heard a ton before actually hearing it. It is honestly such a relaxing song but have such deep lyrics. And the thing is, I’m not entirely sure of the meaning of the song, but I also sort of feel like I do…if that makes sense. It is so drenched in beautiful metaphors that I feel like it can be interpreted in many ways.

~~~
I had to stop myself from writing more because I have so much love for so many of the songs I have on the playlist so far. But totally check out the playlist for yourself and if you do, let me know if you found anything new that you enjoy or if you have any recommendations!
  1. Hi Jess!
    It seems like we have a similar music liking, I also love Coast Modern and Royal Blood. I am always looking for new music so I love posts like this! Since you like Coast Modern I suggest checking out the band Hippo Campus! I feel like they have a similar laid back feel to them. Hope you like them!
