Security (n): the state of feeling safe, stable, and free from fear or anxiety.
Security is a state of mind. However, this state of mind is largely influenced by what we see and what we perceive. We develop insecurities (i.e. anxieties about ourselves and our place in the world) as a result of perceiving ourselves to be inadequate.Different people tend to handle insecurity in different ways.
Some people tend to sit back and blame themselves for their circumstances, claiming that their perceived “inadequacies” are solely of their own fault. Others project their insecurities onto the world around them; blaming the world for their shortcomings while denying fault in any aspect of their problems. These people often tend to feel the need to justify who they are to other people as a means of solidifying their own identity.
True security comes when you are able to identify which areas of your life you feel most insecure about, and use those insecurities to develop a stronger sense of self. Those who are secure don’t need to justify who they are to people or advertise their personality for attention. To be secure is to earn attention instead of demand it. Security is not feeling you have to prove yourself to others in order to be valid. Security is being internally validated.
I have spent some time recently exploring my own personal security and I have realized that although I am not void of insecurity, I am secure in who I am and who I aspire to be.
Take a moment to remind yourself that you are valid.
